CHARACTER NAME: Mari Ohara
CANON & HISTORY:
Canon: Love Live! Sunshine!
Mari was born to an Italian-American father and a Japanese mother. It's implied she grew up in the United States so her first language is English. She moves to Uchiura in elementary school and lives there up until her first year of high school. It's when she first moves there that she meets Kanan Matsuura and Dia Kurosawa who become her best friends.
During their first year of high school the three of them form Aqours in an attempt to help their school attract new students and gain notoriety. The three of them set out to compete in the Love Live, which is essentially a competition for school idol groups. The three of them don't make it to the finals: during the course of her first year of high school Mari is pushed by both her family and teachers to study abroad at a better school because of how vital it would be for her future. Mari constantly turns down the offers; she deems her friends and seeing Aqours through as infinitely more important than something like school.
During the qualifiers for the Love Live Mari hurts herself during practice; it is at this point that Kanan decides they can't perform and the three of them essentially disband Aqours. Kanan and Dia both push Mari to leave Uchiura and travel abroad-- so she does.
Mari comes back after two years, and it's implied that neither Kanan or Dia have been in touch with her during that time period. Because Kanan never told her why she refused to perform that day, Mari is secretly overcome with guilt over the fact that Aqours couldn't perform because she was careless and got injured. From behind the scenes Mari tries to push Kanan to become a member of the new Aqours, run by the underclassmen of her school. Eventually, she learns that Kanan did what she did so Mari wouldn't sabotage her future and would take the opportunities given to her. The two eventually make up, and Mari joins the new Aqours along with Kanan and Dia.
Aqours 2.0 does make it to the Love Live, and they win it too. However despite that the school that they'd worked so hard to try and save doesn't stay open. Mari makes a deal with her father (as he's funneled a lot of money into the school and could decide to keep doing so to keep it open), if they can get 100 new students to apply then the school will stay open. They reach just a little bit short of that; but close doesn't count.
Despite that, Mari seems content with everything she's done in her final year of high school. At the end of the anime she decides to go to college in Europe like her father wants her to.
AGE: 18
CANON POINT:
End of S2, right after graduation but before she leaves to study abroad.
PERSONALITY:
Mari is loud, outgoing, and seems to never be without a smile. She's peppy without being nice, but also isn't a particularly mean person either. She's someone who is so aggressively outgoing and so unafraid of saying things that other people might find strange that most people think of her as honest to a fault. And she kind of is. If she wants something she's going to get it-- she's unafraid of getting in people's faces and taking extreme measures to accomplish something that's important to her. But because of that she's also incredibly hard on herself. She prefers to try and handle things on her own and not burden others, she hates admitting her failures and will do whatever is in her power to hide bad moods or any emotion that isn't blinding cheerfulness.
At her core, she puts others before herself (after all, she comes back to Uchiura knowing fully well the people she cares about may not want to see her; determined to make things right with Kanan and Dia). She has very few people that she is comfortable around and enjoys being around, and she would likely go to the ends of the Earth or spend insane amounts of money to make sure they're happy.
She tends to hide her feelings by acting absolutely ridiculous 80% of the time. If you speak Japanese you'll notice that she has a very distinct American accent when she speaks it and will throw in random English words here and there (which I typically denote with italics). If you catch her in a rare moment of honesty however, you'll notice that the accent and random English phrases become non-existent and her voice becomes a lot less shrill in tone. Essentially, she plays up the exotic mixed girl thing because it's helps her be more comfortable when socializing with other people.
In s1 we're shown that she didn't want to join the original Aqours, Mari in her freshman year of high school seems a lot more introverted and a lot less interested in things outside her comfort zone. Being forced to spend a year away from her family and friends is what is implied to have caused her to play up her eccentricities more. However she says in her school idol diary entries that she still doesn't think the whole idol thing is for her-- she's not good at being cutesy, but enjoys it for her friends and because it gives her a chance to briefly be someone that she's not.
POWERS: none!
OTHER:
- Mari's favorite genre of music is industrial death metal (she heard it once while visiting Germany and fell in love instantly)
- She has a horse whose name I can't remember, but she loves him and horseback riding. She however, only does barrel racing because she finds dressery too restrictive and that defeats the point of why she rides horses to begin with (as a release, basically).
- She's fluent in both English and Japanese, and it's heavily implied she speaks Italian as well.
- I said this in the personality section but to reiterate here: if you are someone in this setting who speaks Japanese you'll likely pick up on the fact that she has a pretty noticeable American/non-native accent when she speaks Japanese and likes to pepper English phrases into almost everything she says (I typically just denote this with italics instead of constantly pointing out that she said something in English).
GAME INFO;
MAGIC ABILITY:
Mari has essentially gained the ability to be a human voodoo doll-- if she inflicts pain upon herself while focusing on someone in front of her they too will feel her pain. There are pretty hard limitations on it though:- Though Mari herself will not feel anything she retains the physical injury and the person she's using her powers on only feels the pain, they don't get physically injured.
- She can only push someone else as far as she can push herself. If she pushes her own body too far she can die.
- The person has to be right in front of her if she wants to use her powers on them.
- She can use the power on multiple people at once, but the pain will be divided equally amongst all her targets. For example, if she slices her arm open and projects that onto three people, each person will only feel 1/3 of her pain.
PRICE:
Mari has given up her immense fortune, her family is broke now. Thanks
ACCLIMATION:
Mari is sitting at a nice 5. She's going to seem totally unaffected because there's no way she'd let anyone know that she's scared or nervous about anything at all ever. Secretly however she's torn, because she's left behind everything shes known and quite a few people who she deeply cares about. Buut, on the other hand she gets to spend an infinite amount of time having adventures with a ton of people she does care about (i.e. her castmates she has here).
If we're not taking castmates into account or they drop I think she moves down to a 4 because the people in her life are really what stabilize her. The less she has of those the more she internally freaks out (and outwardly acts out so no one knows that she's actually freaking out).
